For every Sofia resident, there are 3 major viewpoints on Vitosha to see city bellow – Kopitoto area, Aleko hut and Kamen del peak. While to Kopitoto and Aleko there are paved roads and are very accessible, to rich Kamen del peak is a hard but worth a hike and you have a Vitosha Panorama scenery. The described way it’s OK to start both sides, but I prefer to climb Boyana path to the waterfall, more that to going down on it. For the laziness persons there an option to go to a peak from Aleko where is easy to go with the gondola or car/taxi and make a little walk (3,6 km in one direction).
To Boyana waterfall and a little bit up to Momina Skala hut we follow green marking. There are a lot of people all around the year on this path, more or less Boyana waterfall is one of the main attractions of Vitosha mountain or for me just is close enough. After Momina Skala we are on yellow marking to Platoto – Vitosha plateau where is one of the most interesting reserves in Bulgaria – Torfeno Branishte (Peat Reserve). The walk is nice, through last in high birch and pine mix forest in the mountain.
Little after forest finish and start alpine bush and grass we rich the saddle-pass between Ushite and Kamen del peaks. Here we have a small shelter for Mountain Rescue. It’s not suitable for hikers, but have a locked room for rescue equipment. From here we go through grass and rock on left to peak and see the city below.
The view is stunning and a lot of adventure and hike companies or organisations make a “night” hike to peak to see a sunfall over the city. It is a good idea but always needs to have a local guide. If you do a hike in different that summer season I suggest going directly to Aleko hut, but in the summertime, we have a lot of daylight to go to the Kominite Climbing area and go down to the city with a chairlift or bus from Bai Krastio restaurant.
